Fly Fishing Merit Badge

We’ll be teaching Fly Fishing Merit Badge to boy scouts at Hidden Valley Scout Reservation, Saturday, April 6, 2013.

The camp is part of the New Birth of Freedom Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It is located in Loysville, Pennsylvania. Sherman’s Creek runs right through the camp.

Good Friday

March 29, 2013, also known as Good Friday, was. The temperature in the late afternoon was in the mid-50s. Although it was breezy, even a little gusty, conditions that don’t tend to be favorable to dry fly fishermen, the thick cover on the Letort provided enough protection to allow some decent fishing.

Saw several trout rising in some of lesser known (and seldom fished) honey holes of the upper Letort.

March 9 and 10, 2013 turned out to be a beautiful weekend! The temperatures were in the 50s and the sun was shinning. There were caddis flies dancing on the surface and every fish that bubbled to the top took my fly, usually on the first cast!

Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show Boycott

We won’t be going to the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show in February, 2013. Instead, we join a host of others boycotting the show because of the show’s stance in banning modern hunting rifles from being displayed at the event.

Guess that trip to Montana will have to be postponed. I’m sure the weather here will be nice enough to get out an fish a little. Check back for the stream reports and photos!

UPDATE: The Show has been postponed due the tremendous backlash in response to the ban.

January Dries

The weatherman was especially nice in the beginning of January, 2013 and brought us temperatures nearing the 60s. So I had to get out on the Letort and give it a go.

First thing to do, buy my 2013 PA Fishing License. I love being able to do that online; I print out several copies and keep one in just about every conceivable place I may need one, just in case the opportunity presents itself.

Strung up the new Reddington 9′ 5 wt., and headed to the upper section of the famed stream. As soon as I got to a section that has always shown promise, I saw it…bugs on the water! They were small, but there were 100s of them. It didn’t take but a couple of puffs on the Ran Habano #3 before I saw my first rise. I tied that dry fly on so quick, I’m sure I skipped a step or two…I know I forgot to sharpen the hook or even trim the tag in my haste to get it on the water. Second cast and BAM! Check out the photo…the color and health of this fish was incredible. After a quick photo shot, it was safely released back into the stream. What a perfect January fishing day!

Christmas Day

gotFoot out Christmas Day after the kids had torn through some presents, to try my new Tenkara 7:3 rod…weather was perfect, but no fish were rising. But at least I got to fish!

Lower Letort

Fished the lower Letort today, December 19, most of the afternoon. The weather was supposed to be nice, sunny, mid-50s. Instead, it was cloudy, very windy, and in the 40s. The fish must have known it too, because today would have been the perfect “guarantee” day. You would have seen a lot of stream, some fish, and earned a free day because I got skunked.

Next time, it will be better!

Big Spring

The ditch at the Big Spring fished well November 28, 2012. The air temperature was around 40, and it was overcast. The water, of course, was gin clear, and loaded with a lot of fish!

Didn’t see anything on the surface, and none of our dry flies seemed to entice any interest. Moved on to an egg pattern and … Wham! Fish after fish. All around dusk.

Thanksgiving Eve

Found myself on the upper Letort and fished Thanksgiving Eve for the last hour of daylight. The weather was very nice and a steady midge hatch brought at least one unsuspecting brown trout to the surface. One was enough…I tied on a small light Cahill, clipped the wings a little, and dropped it in front of the rising fish.

Bam! There was no slurping involved. That native brown took my fly and proceeded to jump clear out of the gin-clear stream, not once, not twice, but three times!

Landed it, took this photo, and released it for another day.

Any day you can catch a fish on the Letort is a good day…late November makes it even better!
